Exciting Postdoctoral Opportunities at Meteorological Synthesizing Centre – East (MSC-E) / 5.06.2024

The Meteorological Synthesizing Centre – East (MSC-E), a prominent research hub within the Jožef Stefan Institute's Department of Environmental Sciences, is currently seeking applications for two postdoctoral research positions. These positions are based in Ljubljana, Slovenia, at the forefront of innovative environmental research under the UNECE Convention on Long-Range Transboundary Air Pollution.

1. Postdoctoral Research Associate in Atmospheric Modeling of Mercury and Other Toxic Metals

Key Responsibilities:

  • Update and further develop the modeling approaches of the GLEMOS chemical transport model for simulating atmospheric pollution with toxic metals such as mercury, lead, and cadmium;
  • Conduct model assessments of toxic metal dispersion in the atmosphere and their deposition to terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems across the European region and globally;
  • Analyze modeling data and disseminate results through annual reports, journal publications and presentations at conferences.

2. Postdoctoral Research Associate in Multi-Media Modeling of Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs)

Key responsibilities:

  • Update and further develop the multi-media modeling approach in the GLEMOS chemical transport model for selected POPs such as polyaromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), polychlorinated dibenzo(p)dioxins and dibenzofurans (PCDD/Fs), and hexachlorobenzene (HCB);
  • Conduct model assessment of POP dispersion and cycling in the environment over the European region and on a global scale;
  • Analyze modeling data and disseminate results through annual reports, journal publications and presentations at conferences.

About MSC-E:
The MSC-E, hosted by the Jožef Stefan Institute's Department of Environmental Sciences, is part of the EMEP scientific program. The Centre excels in conducting cutting-edge research and operational simulations on the dispersion of toxic substances, with a particular emphasis on atmospheric and multi-media modeling. MSC-E's work supports policymakers by providing detailed assessments of pollution trends and transboundary pollution dynamics.
