At the second meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the Minamata Convention on mercury (COP2), held from 19 to 23 November 2018 at the International Conference Center in Geneva, Switzerland, the representative of the Jožef Stefan Institute, prof. dr. Milena Horvat reported on the results of a global survey on direct releases from anthropogenic sources into aquatic environments, which amount to about 600 tons per year, representing 20% of the total anthropogenic input into the environment. Chapter 6, co-ordinated by Dr. David Kocman, is a vital part of the  Global Mercury Assessment 2018 report, which emerges every six years and brings the main research findings on a global scale. In addition to releases into aquatic environments, staff from the Department of Environmental Sciences made a significant contribution to the report on the exposure of the population to this dangerous toxic metal on a global scale.
