Metrology Day 2026 in Portorož: Reliable Measurements for Better Policies / 21.05.2026
The Slovenian Office of Metrology marked Metrology Day 2026 on 20 May in Portorož, commemorating the 1875 signing of the Metre Convention in Paris, which established the foundations of the international measurement system and led to the creation of the BIPM.
This year’s event focused on the importance of reliable measurements for evidence-based policymaking under the theme “Reliable measurements are the foundation of effective policies.”
A strong contribution came from the Institute Jožef Stefan (IJS), where Assoc. Prof. Dr. Tea Zuliani delivered a lecture on metrology in food safety within the circular economy, focusing on analytical methods for detecting contaminants in food and packaging.
Speakers emphasized that accurate, traceable measurements are essential for informed decisions in public health, environmental protection, energy, and innovation, and highlighted future challenges such as digitalisation and artificial intelligence.
