From Research to Regulatory and Societal Impact: a retrospective of environmental assessment practice at JSI/O-2

Short Abstract:

Over the past twenty years, environmental impact/sustainability assessment has evolved in response to societal and regulatory change, but its role in guiding decisions has weakened, with many assessments reduced to administrative checkboxes rather than meaningful instruments for informing sustainable choices. In this lecture, I present a retrospective overview of key EU- and commercially funded research projects in which I have been actively involved, spanning the assessment of energy systems, sustainable mobility, industrial risk, pollution mitigation, and related domains. I explore not only the methodological innovations that these projects developed and introduced, but, more importantly, their real-world uptake and impact. In this regard, emphasis is placed on how research outputs have influenced administrative procedures, contributed to regulatory updates, and supported public authorities in implementing more transparent, evidence-based governance oriented toward sustainability and environmental responsibility.
