Title: Addressing the Challenge of Chemical Speciation of Atmospheric Oxidized Mercury
Abstract:
The oxidation state and chemical speciation of atmospheric mercury strongly influence its atmospheric lifetime, yet Hg(II) speciation remains poorly understood due to its extremely low abundance and chemical lability. In this seminar, Prof. Khalizov will present complementary methods developed to address this challenge. These include a chemical-ionization mass-spectrometric technique capable of direct, online detection of gas-phase Hg(II) at ~100 pptv, with significant potential for improved sensitivity, and an indirect approach based on pre-concentration on tunable substrates followed by reactive paper-spray ionization mass spectrometry. Together, these methods enable molecular characterization of Hg(II) in samples containing as little as 1–2 ng and open new possibilities for experimental investigation of atmospheric Hg(II) speciation.
You are warmly invited to attend.
