O2 seminar presentation on participatory agent-based modelling for flood risk management / 16.03.2026
New research directions in participatory modelling and decision support are presented within the JSI Department of Environmental Sciences.
On 18 March 2026, Dr. Rok Novak will present his ongoing research at the O2 seminar at the Jožef Stefan Institute, focusing on the project “Participatory Agent-Based Modeling for Flood Risk Management: Integrating Local Knowledge, AI, and Decision Support Systems.” The presentation introduces a novel approach that combines participatory methods, agent-based modelling (ABM), and artificial intelligence to improve understanding and management of flood risks.
The project builds on experience gained through previous Living Lab activities, including the Urban Cycling Lab Ljubljana, by extending participatory approaches into the domain of disaster risk management. It integrates citizen-generated data, local knowledge, and advanced modelling techniques to simulate behavioural responses and support decision-making processes through dedicated decision support systems (DSS).
The seminar provides an opportunity to discuss how participatory modelling frameworks can be applied beyond urban mobility and environmental exposure, highlighting their potential for addressing complex environmental challenges such as flooding.
Following the presentation, Prof. Dr. Milena Horvat, Head of the Department of Environmental Sciences, will present updates and ongoing developments within the department.
