Strengthening Slovenia–Brazil Scientific Cooperation in Nuclear Applications / 11.06.2026

In June 2026, a scientific visit from Brazil to the Jožef Stefan Institute not only advanced collaboration in nuclear analytical techniques, but also further strengthened the inter-institutional and bilateral ties between Slovenia and the Brazilian Embassy in Ljubljana.

As part of a scientific visit supported by the Brazilian foundation FAPEMIG, focused on the determination of rare earth elements (REEs) in minerals and ores using the k₀-NAA technique, Dr. Maria Angela Menezes from the Nuclear Technology Development Center of the Brazilian Commission for Nuclear Energy visited the Department of Environmental Sciences at the Jožef Stefan Institute in collaboration with Dr. Radojko Jacimović.

During the visit, the Brazilian Embassy in Ljubljana was informed about the ongoing cooperation and kindly invited the visiting scientists to an official meeting on 11 June. Dr. Jacimović and Dr. Menezes met with the Brazilian Ambassador, Ms. Maria Izabel Vieira, Counsellor Mr. Paulo de Tarso Jardim, and Mr. Jean Ebling from the Trade Promotion Section.

The meeting provided an opportunity to present the activities of both institutions in the field of nuclear analytical applications and to explore future opportunities for cooperation. Particular emphasis was placed on potential exchanges of postgraduate students and the strengthening of technical collaboration between the two countries.

Both sides expressed interest in further developing bilateral scientific ties to propose future institutional agreements to the respective national authorities.
