World Metrology Day in Portorož / 21.05.2025
On May 20, 2025, the global metrology community celebrated World Metrology Day, marking the 150th anniversary of the signing of the Metre Convention — a foundational agreement that established a unified, internationally recognized measurement system.
The central event in Slovenia took place in Portorož, bringing together stakeholders from science, industry, and government. Among the participants were also colleagues from the Department of Environmental Sciences, who represented one of Slovenia’s designated metrology institutions (designated for amount of substance/elemental composition in organic and inorganic matrices) responsible for the development and maintenance of national measurement standards.
Their presence highlighted Slovenia’s commitment to international measurement traceability and standardization, especially in areas related to environmental monitoring and sustainability. The celebration, themed "Measurements for all times, for all people," underscored the crucial role of accurate, reliable measurements in supporting science, industry, health, and environmental protection — both today and for the future.
The event featured keynote addresses by the Minister of the Economy, Tourism and Sport, Matjaž Han, BIPM Director Dr. Martin Milton, and Dr. Samo Kopač, Director of the Slovenian Metrology Office. Invited speaker was Dr. Rado Lapuh, who presented 150 years of Metrology Through Time. An engaging roundtable discussion and a rich cultural program further emphasized the far-reaching impact of metrology on modern society.
