Co-creating healthier environments

H2LLab is a research-driven Living Lab embedded at the Jožef Stefan Institute, where environmental health, urban sustainability, and participatory research come together in real-life settings. We combine environmental monitoring, spatial analysis, and co-creation with citizens and stakeholders to better understand how environments affect health and wellbeing.

Most research stops at data. We take it further — testing ideas in the real world, working directly with people, and translating results into practical solutions, tools, and policy-relevant insights that improve everyday environments.

What we do

H2LLab brings together environmental monitoring, participatory research, and real-world experimentation to understand how environments shape health and behaviour. We work directly with citizens, policymakers, and partners to co-create solutions that are tested where they actually matter — in everyday life.

How we work

Our work follows a Living Lab approach — combining exploration, co-creation, real-life experimentation, and participatory evaluation. From identifying problems with stakeholders to testing solutions in real environments, users are involved throughout the entire process.

Real-world projects

H2LLab builds on a strong portfolio of national and European projects, including large-scale citizen science campaigns, environmental monitoring initiatives, and participatory research in both urban and community settings. From urban cycling exposure studies to work in industrially impacted regions, our projects demonstrate how research translates into practice.

From data to impact

We go beyond data collection. By integrating environmental measurements, behavioural insights, and stakeholder knowledge, H2LLab supports decision-making, policy development, and innovation. Our outputs include decision-support tools, policy recommendations, and real-world interventions that improve environmental health.

Who we work with

H2LLab operates within a broad network of partners, including research institutions, municipalities, public health bodies, industry, and civil society organizations. These collaborations enable us to connect scientific knowledge with real-world needs and implementation.

Where it happens

Our work takes place in real environments — on city streets, in homes, schools, and communities. By embedding research directly into everyday contexts, we ensure that results are relevant, actionable, and grounded in lived experience.
